Is your teenager considering a nose reshaping procedure for cosmetic reasons or functional concerns, such as a deviated septum? Many parents want to know how long the surgical results will last. The good news is that a teen rhinoplasty can last for years or even a lifetime when performed after the nose has reached full maturity.
At Brissett Plastic Surgery in Houston, TX, double board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony E. Brissett helps teenage patients and their families navigate this important decision with honesty and expertise. Call today to learn more about our processes and schedule a consultation.
Is your teen ready for rhinoplasty?
Not every teenager who is unhappy with their nose is ready for rhinoplasty. Many teens need to wait until they are at least 16 or 17 to undergo this procedure. This is because operating before the nose has fully developed can lead to complications and undesirable changes as the face continues to grow.
Teen rhinoplasty may also be recommended for functional concerns, such as a deviated septum causing breathing difficulties, an injured nasal bridge, or other structural issues that impact their health or quality of life. In these cases, addressing the problem earlier rather than later can make a meaningful difference in both form and function.
Beyond physical readiness, emotional maturity matters just as much. Ideal candidates understand what a rhinoplasty can and cannot achieve and are pursuing surgery for their own reasons rather than outside pressure.
What a teen rhinoplasty procedure involves
A teen rhinoplasty follows the same basic principles as adult nose reshaping. Dr. Brissett will work with the patient to understand their concerns and goals before developing a surgical plan tailored to their facial anatomy. We can address a wide range of concerns, including the nasal bridge, tip, width, and overall proportion of the nose in relation to the rest of the face.
A deviated septum can also be corrected at the same time if breathing is a concern. Most patients are back to their normal routine within 1 – 2 weeks, though optimal results take up to a year to fully emerge as swelling gradually resolves.
How long do rhinoplasty results last?
When performed after the nose has reached full maturity, rhinoplasty results are designed to last a lifetime. The structural changes made to the nasal bridge, tip, and underlying cartilage are long-lasting, and the nose should maintain its new shape for years to come.
That said, the natural aging process does continue after surgery, and subtle changes in the surrounding facial tissue can still occur over time. For teens who undergo rhinoplasty at the appropriate age and stage of development, the results typically hold up beautifully well into adulthood and beyond.
